The Red Bench Project
We believe it’s essential to give back to a cause that truly matters, especially when you’ve seen firsthand how devastating suicide can be. In 2025/2026 our chosen charity is The Red Bench Project.

Suicide is a tragedy that affects many in the UK: in 2023, 6,069 suicides were registered in England and Wales, that’s about 11.4 deaths per 100,000 people. Office for National Statistics+1 Rates rose in most regions; in particular, the North East saw one of the largest percentage increases over the previous year. Office for National Statistics

The Red Bench Project works directly in our region, placing striking red benches in areas with high rates of suicide. These “talking benches” serve multiple roles:
-
They are a visible reminder no one is alone,
-
They carry information about mental health support services, and
-
They encourage simple human connections. Someone passing by stopping to say “are you okay?” can make a difference.
-

Since its launch in 2023 by founder Wayne Rambo Groves (a suicide survivor), benches have been placed throughout the North East, including South Shields, Jarrow, Hebburn and Marsden, with even more planned. The Red Bench Project+1
We chose The Red Bench Project not just because of its local impact, but because it embodies hope, connection, and prevention. It reminds us that small acts of kindness , a bench, a conversation, can help save lives.

FOR MICHAEL - FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS

We would also like to dedicate our support of this charity to someone very close to our hearts - Michael Graham, from Newcastle.

Michael was a son, a brother, a father, and a cherished friend. Losing him was heartbreaking. He struggled silently, and despite the love around him, he couldn’t find a way through the pain he carried inside.
In the wake of his passing, we have witnessed the deep and lasting impact on his family; the grief, the guilt, and the unanswerable questions: Could we have done more? Should we have seen the signs? These are burdens no one should have to bear.

Michael’s life was cut tragically short, but the memories we hold of him; his humour, his warmth, his presence, will stay with us always.

This dedication is for him, and for everyone still fighting silent battles. Through this support, we hope to help others find light in their darkest moments.
